The Blind People's Association (www.bpaindia.org) has established a well equipped Eye Hospital at Bareja with the objective of providing quality eye health services at affordable or completely free of cost services. Encouraged from Rasna International, the BPA wishes to provide affordable eye surgeries to urban poor from Ahmedabad slums. As a part of Joy of Giving Week 400 cataract surgeries of urban poor patients would be conducted completely free of cost

Mr. Asit Vora, Mayor of Ahmedabad, inaugurated the "Joy of Giving Sight" program on 3rd October. During the camp, 188 patients were examined and 28 patients were identified with cataract surgeries. 10 patients will be restored vision tomorrow morning and other will be operated upon after 6th October.

The BPA has now achieved target of conducting 400 cataract surgeries completely free of cost for the poor people of Ahmedabad slums. In addition to this set target, it could conduct another 58 surgeries for patients from Bhavanagar.
Encouraged from the response from this initiative, BPA is now conducting regular eye camps in various urban slums of Ahmedabad. As the estimated backlog of eye surgeries for Ahmedabad alone is 20,000 eye surgeries, BPA would continue organizing such camps on regular basis.
