Daan Utsav

Give today!

The Joy of Giving Week Smile Deck has 52 simple "giving ideas", 1 on each playing card. Each suit represents giving to a specific group-

- Clubs- for people you know

- Spades- for our world/environment

- Hearts- for strangers

- Diamonds- for yourself, to help become a better person

Simple reshuffle the deck each day, and do whatever "giving act" is randomly selected for you!

You can play this game as a family, too!

Smile Decks were first created by a group of Helpothers.org volunteers, as a humble coffee table experiment- the belief was that each act of kindness, no matter how small, changes the world. JGW volunteers worked with Helpothers.org volunteers to create an Indian version of the Smile Deck so that it could be launched during the Week here, and used to encourage people to do little acts of kindness.

Feeling of 'joy' of giving to others can only be experienced after the act. Small acts like;  giving a brand new note of Rs1000/- to a road side vender ( like vegetable,flowers,....) who are old and toil their day in the hot sun selling what little they have; getting a packet of food for the hungry waiting out side a Restaurant; giving your brand new slippers/shoes to the poor old man walking in the sun; giving, once in a while, a small gift or money to the Muncipal sweeper who keeps your locality clean irrespective of whether it is raining or hot sunshine; - I do practice these now and then and the smile on their face immediately after the act, would give me a feeling which no amount of money can give.

The Smile deck of cards is a wonderful idea! I used it today to great effect during a talk on Daan Utsav that I gave to a group of about 60 ladies of the Army, Navy and Air Force officers wives' association in Noida / NCR. I distributed the cards among the ladies and made them read out the small / simple ideas of giving, some of them really very innovative. Am hoping that this has generated an interest and these ladies will now spread the idea further in their respective groups of family & friends, as also come up with their own novel ideas of giving! It took me some effort in getting the sheets with the images of the cards printed and then cut to make a deck of 52 cards. It would certainly help if the deck could be made available on request, on payment of course.

Hansraj Jivandas College of Education Principal, faculty, students feels priviledged to be actively involved in Joy of Giving and to have the real FEEL of inner happiness by participating in this project.I Dr.Shrima Banerjee rightly feel every individual must actively work towards the acheivement of this goal and to reach out to the unreached sections of the society.

I agree with this idea of Mr. Ramarao. This could spread your ideas at-least in a different way. Good thought Ramarao ji.

Dear all,

I’ve been involved in community service for sometime now that it’s second nature to me now...... When I think of why it’s important to be involved, I hardly know where to begin to explain how I feel…..But still am sharing this idea with you for your views and participation.
Keeping the "Joy of Giving Week” in mind....Thought of voluntarily going to neighborhood / nearby Traffic police station & checking whether there are anyTraffic violation penalty imposed on my/our vehicle number (this would also be applicable if we have received any Traffic Violation ticket by post) and settling it on the spot my cash payment and collect the reciept. This might sound funny but Together if we do this act….iam sure it will make a difference and this can also be considered as diminutive part of both CSR activities i.e. Corporate Social Responsibility & Citizens Social Responsibility. Choice is yours......Iam doing this act as an individual  but are you willing to initiate this ??? I urge you to act / participate in this voluntary community service. Thanks in Advance !! Best Wishes, Vishal Vyas
